We live in an age where electronics has taken over all information. With some very basic information and the tap of a few keys much of our personal data is available to many people. My husband and I went to a major department store to buy vacuum cleaner filters for the machine that we had bought a few years ago. Neither one of us could remember the model number of the vacuum or the filters that we needed. The young clerk asked us for our telephone number. He entered the number and within seconds had the record of the vacuum we bought, the date we bought it, how we paid for it as well as the history of every other purchase that we had made in the store. We were discussing this with my nieces when we met them for lunch later that day. One of our nieces has been dealing with a financial mess since she had her checkbook stolen from her purse. Before she realized the checkbook was gone the thief had written several checks, draining the account. My niece and the bank figured out that she had four check blanks that were in the checkbook that was stolen. All four checks were written out. My niece closed the account and started another checking account. Although she had over drafts to pay and was out the money she thought the incident was over. She did not count on the thief using the personal check reorder form that was tucked away inside the checkbook. She had folded the form and placed it behind the checks. The thief found it and placed an order for additional checks. The personal check reorder form has all the information needed to get additional check blanks. The check company has no idea that the account has been closed. The personal check reorder form was from a well known stationery company that sells designed checks cheaper than you can purchase them from the bank. The thief even had the address changed so that my niece did not get the bill or the insufficient funds notices.

This incident has destroyed my niece’s credit. She and her husband were planning on building a house and have had to place their plans on hold until her credit rating is restored. She also cannot write checks in several stores because the thief had written bad checks using her name. In listening to her story I realize how important it is to safe guard your personal check reorder forms. There is usually more than one with each order of checks. I now make sure that I shred all but one form and store the form in a separate location from the check blanks.
